Abstract
Objective: This study was to observe the root surface roughness and formation when subgingival scaling was performed with a Gracey curette and ultrasonic scaler and to find out the necessity of fluoride application after scaling.

Method: Twenty-four human teeth with calculus on their root surface, which were extracted because of chronic periodontitis, were selected for this interventional study. Calculus area were divided into five parts : One of the them was used for the control group (Group I), and the other parts were prepared for Gracey curette treatment (Group II), ultrasonic scaler treatment (Group III), Gracey curette and fluoride application treatment (Group IV), and ultrasonic scaler and fluoride application treatment (Group V). These samples were observed by SEM and the surface roughness was measured.

Results: The root surface roughness values of the hand instrument groups were lower than the ultrasonic groups. Also, the fluoride coated surface roughness values after using hand and ultrasonic scalers were decreased (p£¼0.05), and all samples were taken with the magnification of 1,000 and 3,000. The root surface roughness and cracks were increased in the following order: Group I, Group IV, Group V, Group II and Group IV.

Conclusion: This study suggests that scaling be finished with hand instrument treatments after using the ultrasonic instruments because ultrasonic instruments make the roughness of root surface rougher than hand instruments. Fluoride application of exposed root surface after scaling may be beneficial in decreasing hypersensitivity and improving biological cementing of gingiva.
